About John

John Maynard is a crime prevention and community safety specialist with a focus on making and shaping safer towns and cities who has been working in the field for over twenty years. John is primarily interested in understanding environmental psychology and criminology and how various situations in a range of different settings influence the way we think, feel and behave. He is interested in the links between human behaviour and the way public and private spaces are planned, designed and used – or not used. He has taken his background in psychology, public health and criminology as a crime prevention practitioner to explore how criminal behaviour exploits given situations in specific settings in order to commit a crime or to consider otherwise.

John is an expert in understanding CPTED in a range of environments and situations and works to employ its principles in creating safe, liveable and sustainable towns and cities. He currently runs courses in CPTED for a range of professionals including planners, urban designers, architects, Police, security consultants, community development workers and crime prevention practitioners. His services also include compiling CPTED reports and reviews for various small through to major projects and providing advice on all aspects of crime prevention and community safety planning.

John has worked at Parramatta, Inner West and City of Sydney Councils in crime prevention and community safety portfolios. He has authored several localised Community Safety Plans including the Redfern-Waterloo and Glebe plans as well as the City of Sydney’s Safe City Strategy and provided CPTED comment to several major urban renewal projects and development applications including Green Square, Barangaroo, Harold Park and Parramatta Square.

John’s work as a consultant has involved working for Parramatta, Inner West, Penrith, Burwood, Wollongong and Coffs Harbour Councils as well as additional work in partnership with other consultants in Leppington, Rushcutters Bay and Newcastle. The projects have involved everything from holistic Crime Prevention Plans through to CPTED training and reports for specific sites.

He has undertaken a range of public speaking engagements at conferences and forums both in the international and local context in Sweden, Canada and in most capital cities in Australia including Melbourne, Perth, Brisbane, Adelaide, Hobart and in his home town of Sydney as well as many parts of regional New South Wales.

John regularly gives guest lectures to criminology and design students at the University of Sydney, UNSW, UTS and the University of Western Sydney.

As well as running CPTED courses and providing advice on CPTED to Government and the private sector, John has spent much of the last three years researching and writing and is hoping to publish his book on Preventing Crime in Towns and Cities – a CPTED guide in the near future.
