Projects
In addition to providing training John has worked on a number of different projects with a range of different organisations using his CPTED expertise. John has completed CPTED reports for specific sites, has authored local Crime Prevention / Community Safety Plans for local government and can provide CPTED or general crime prevention advice to your project or development.
- 2018 – Inner West Council Home Security Expo - Worked and presented with Police and Council on a Community Forum to discuss local crime and safety issues and products with residents and local businesses.
- 2018-2019 - Parramatta City Council Crime Prevention Plan 2020-2023 - Authored and co-ordinated all aspects of the plan’s development including the Crime Profile, Community Survey, Focus Group questions, internal discussions across business units, site inspections and strategy development. The role included providing CPTED advice in relation to Parramatta Square, Parramatta Stadium, Parramatta Homelessness Strategy and the Parramatta Light Rail Project. https://www.cityofparramatta.nsw.gov.au/crime-prevention-plan
- 2019 – Burwood Council Crime Prevention Plan - Worked with Council to develop the Crime Profile, Community Survey and oversaw broader aspects of the planning process.
- 2019 – Wollongong Pedestrian Lighting Audit Study – This research aimed to assess different forms of public and private lighting in the Wollongong CBD and surrounding streets in a defined study area and to examine its relationship to the night time city in terms of pedestrian movement, the activation or otherwise of public spaces and the general condition of the nocturnal environment. The study included exploring the principles of Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) as they applied to specific locations such as transport interchanges namely the train station, bus stops and taxi ranks as well as Crown Street Mall, surrounding streets and lanes and other public and semi-public areas. The report highlighted specific locations where lighting could be improved and where access control measures could be better employed to delineate private and public space. CPTED recommendations in relation to the way spaces were used, creative wayfinding and signage also formed part of the report including suggestions for improving the overall amenity and attractiveness of the City Centre area.
- 2019 – Burwood Council Development Assessment and CPTED Training – Ran a training course with Council staff and N.S.W. Police including a site inspection identifying design flaws in a new development experiencing burglary and anti-social behaviour and working together through a current development application to exchange information and to streamline and add value to the process
- 2019 – Penrith City Council Development Assessment (D.A.) and CPTED Training - Ran two training courses with Council staff and N.S.W. Police including a site inspection identifying design flaws in a new development experiencing burglary and anti-social behaviour and working together through a current development application to exchange information and to streamline and add value to the process.
- 2020 – Coffs Harbour City Council Community Village Safety Audit Report - A report which detailed the investigations and findings and made a number of recommendations relating to safety and security issues identified by stakeholders and their clients at a community facility in Coffs Harbour.
- 2020 – Mornington Island Council, Queensland – Crime prevention and community safety planning advice including community survey and research.
- 2020 – Coffs Harbour City Council CBD Safety Audit Report - This report was commissioned in relation to a number of crime prevention, urban design and public space management issues in the Coffs Harbour CBD. Safety audits and site assessments were undertaken with a range of stakeholders and recommendations put forward in short, medium to longer term time frames at both the micro and macro level which aim to dovetail with the CBD Masterplan and improve safety and security and broader amenity in and around the study area.
- 2021 – Phillips-Marler - Liverpool City Council – Phillimona Gardens CPTED Report - This report considered CPTED in the context of a proposed pocket park development, Philimona Gardens in Liverpool New South Wales and its relationship to an adjacent medium density residential development and surrounding area. The report detailed how the planned development considered a number of CPTED factors to mitigate against any perceived or actual crime and made recommendations to that effect.
- 2021 – Phillips-Marler – N.S.W. Department of Planning, Industry and Environment – New Regional Park, Camden Valley Way, Leppington CPTED Report – This report considered CPTED in the context of a proposed new regional park development in Leppington in the Liverpool Local Government Area of south-western Sydney. The report assessed the park’s plan from a CPTED perspective and made a number of recommendations relating to surveillance including lighting considerations, access control and movement, ownership and activity and environmental management and maintenance.
- 2021-2022 – Harris Consultants – Civille Consultants - Woollahra Council – Paddington Greenway Cycleway - A CPTED report in partnership with Harris Consultants for a proposed cycleway in Rushcutters Bay incorporating CPTED recommendations.
- 2022 – Phillips-Marler - Newcastle City Council – CPTED Report for Gregson Park upgrade.
